气候弹性

除了 to lowering emissions 和 advocating for progressive action strategies, we are focused on managing the potential physical risks 和 opportunities that could emerge from climate change.

气候弹性

Over the past decade, we have implemented a range of climate adaptations to reduce physical risks. These measures include projects to improve water storage 和 treatment, spring runoff 和 flood mitigation strategies, as well as strategies to reduce freshwater consumption.

We have also worked closely with industry partners to support industry-wide st和ards for climate adaptation. This includes partnering with the International Council on Mining 和 Metals (ICMM), which has been a leader in sharing best practices. ICMM  supports improvement 和 makes learnings publicly available through reports. 除了, we work closely with the Mining Association of 加拿大 (MAC) to develop st和ardized guidance for managing the physical impacts of climate change within the mining industry, which supports the updated climate change protocol under MAC’s Towards Sustainable Mining 程序.

This work has helped us develop tools to incorporate climate change into existing climate assessments 和 supported improved climate modelling 和 a more robust approach to climate-related risk identification 和 management.

例如, at our 高地谷铜矿 Operation we have a spring runoff water management strategy to protect key infrastructure; we also completed climate change analyses to contribute to long-term adaptation plans for the mine. At our 涉渡河 操作 we are advancing a flood mitigation project in response to erosion caused by high water levels. And at our operations in 智利, we have implemented projects to reduce our freshwater consumption in response to potential water availability constraints due to future climate conditions.

In 2023, to support the identification 和 assessment of risks related to the physical impacts of climate change, we procured relevant climate change projection data from the most current global climate model data available - CMIP6 - for our operations, portions of our logistics corridors, 和 select projects 和 legacy properties. CMIP6 is the latest phase of collaboration under the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP); The data are scientifically robust 和 provide the foundation for the Intergovernmental Panel on 气候变化’s Sixth Assessment Reports.

The data sets include time horizons for the near-future (2030s), mid-century (2050s) 和 end-of-century (2080s) for two of the future climate 场景 proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on 气候变化’s Sixth Assessment Report, 场景, SSP2-4.5和SSP5-8.5, which correspond with a moderate emissions scenario 和 the highest concentration of CO2 emissions scenario, 分别.

One dimension of our business that is particularly exposed to climate hazards is our logistics chains. In 2023, we undertook a climate change vulnerability assessment with a qualified third party to better underst和 the potential future impacts of climate change on a key segment of the logistics route for our steelmaking coal. The vulnerability 和 impact assessment will be used to inform risk management actions moving forward.
